Popularity of apps did not falter in 2022 with the app market looking stronger than ever as we end this exciting year. In the third quarter of 2022, users downloaded approximately 27 billion apps from Google Play and 8.2 billion from the Apple App Store. Approximately 49% of people open an app 11 times each day and mobile apps are expected to generate over $935 billion in revenue by 2023.

BeReal

BeReal took the number one spot on Apple’s App Store in the United States in July 2022, with many young Amercians abandoning Instagram or Facebook for this new social media app. BeReal has 73.5 million monthly active users and an astounding 20 million daily active users. BeReal has been downloaded 67 million times since its 2019 launch, with the vast majority of those downloads happening in 2022.

What Made BeReal Successful?

BeReal takes a unique approach to  a traditional social media app as one of the most popular mobile apps in 2022. The app's goal is to get away from detailed curation and professional influencers. It aims to give a real glimpse into users’ lives. Because the app only allows users to post one picture a day, there is a level of scarcity that is also what helped Wordle grow retention. BeReal doesn’t allow users to browse  friend's photos until they post their own, which also helps boost daily engagement.

Between the daily motivation to post on the app in order to see what others are doing and the fact that BeReal isn’t cluttered with ads, users are drawn to the app versus other forms of social media.. With the pandemic forcing individuals to stay indoors, this dance and short video platform took off. In 2020 alone, the social media app gained 980.7 million first time installs, which was a 28% increase compared to the following year.
